Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound that is a colorless, odorless, transparent liquid at room temperature and is a hygroscopic flammable liquid. It has high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, aprotic, miscible with water. It is soluble in most organic substances such as ethanol, propanol, benzene and chloroform. It is known as “universal solvent”. Heating in the presence of an acid produces a small amount of a compound such as methyl mercaptan, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfide, methanesulfonic acid or the like. It decomposes at high temperatures, reacts violently with chlorine, and emits a light blue flame in the air. Can be used as organic solvent, reaction medium and organic synthesis intermediates. It can also be used as a dyeing solvent, a dye remover, a dye carrier for synthetic fibers, and an absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide.
