Chromium is an important component of glucose tolerance factor (GTF). Recent studies have shown that chromium pyridine-formate improves energy balance and insulin function by increasing the amount of AMPK, an active AMP protein kinase (AMPK) associated with metabolic pathways in skeletal muscle cells. The research was led by Dr William Cefalu, director of the nutrition and chronic diseases research unit at Pennington biomedical centre, whose lecturer Dr Zhong Wang presented the findings this week at the 41st annual European diabetes research conference in Athens, Greece.
