Aprotinin, also known as bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor, is a basic polypeptide chain containing 58 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 6.5 kDa (6511.44), primarily extracted from bovine lungs. Aprotinin is a protease inhibitor that can inhibit trypsin and chymotrypsin, preventing the activation of other active protease precursors in the pancreas and the autoactivation of trypsinogen. Aprotinin preparations are clinically used for the prevention and treatment of acute pancreatitis, bleeding caused by fibrinolysis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. It is also used in anti-shock therapy.
